Text: Joshua 2:5, 6, 16
After Moses’ death, the Lord instructed Joshua (his successor) to lead the Israelites into the land He swore to give them, which was across the Jordan River.
Joshua sent two spies to carry out a feasibility study on the land especially around Jericho, a city about eight miles northwest of the Jordan River.
This city had walls high and wide enough for its people to build their houses and live in them; the city gates were strong and protected the people against possible attacks from adversaries.
Rahab’s house was one of those built on the city walls; although this woman was a prostitute, the Lord used her to hide the spies from the men of Jericho who were in pursuit.
When the king’s men questioned Rahab, she replied “…Yes, the men were here earlier…they left the town at dusk, as the gates were about to close. I do not know where they went but if you hurry, you can probably catch up with them” Joshua 2:4-5
Verse 6 tells us that “…she had taken the spies up to the roof of her house and hidden them beneath bundles of flax she had laid out.”
Believers, please understand that your deliverance will very often come from an unusual place; God’s ways are not our ways.
Subsequently, Rahab advised the spies to escape to the hill country for three days (V16)
There are other significant events in the Bible that occurred in three days:
- The butler and the baker’s fate was determined in 3 days (Genesis 40:13)
- Moses told Pharaoh that the Israelites would go into the wilderness for 3 days to sacrifice to the Lord their God (Exodus 8:27)
- Jonah was released from the belly of the whale after 3 days (Jonah 1:17 & 2:10)
- Our Lord Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead on the 3rd day
For the most part, the challenges we face in life are designed to build character in us; when we trust God during our difficult times, He will work things out for our good.
Therefore, it is time to come away from the plains of despondency and despair; it is time to flee from the plains of sin and the world!
The only safe place is on the roof with Christ!
